Pedestrian Volume Prediction Using a Diffusion Convolutional Gated Recurrent Unit Model

Effective models for analysing and predicting pedestrian flow are important to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and other road users. These tools also play a key role in optimising infrastructure design and geometry and supporting the economic utility of interconnected communities. The implementation of city-wide automatic pedestrian counting systems provides researchers with invaluable data, enabling the development and training of deep learning applications that offer better insights into traffic and crowd flows. Benefiting from real-world data provided by the City of Melbourne pedestrian counting system, this study presents a pedestrian flow prediction model, as an extension of Diffusion Convolutional Grated Recurrent Unit (DCGRU) with dynamic time warping, named DCGRU-DTW. This model captures the spatial dependencies of pedestrian flow through the diffusion process and the temporal dependency captured by Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). Through extensive numerical experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the classic vector autoregressive model and the original DCGRU across multiple model accuracy metrics.
Understanding Pedestrian Movement Using Urban Sensing Technologies: The Promise of Audio-based Sensors

While various sensors have been deployed to monitor vehicular flows, sensing pedestrian movement is still nascent. Yet walking is a significant mode of travel in many cities, especially those in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Understanding pedestrian volumes and flows is essential for designing safer and more attractive pedestrian infrastructure and for controlling periodic overcrowding. This study discusses a new approach to scale up urban sensing of people with the help of novel audio-based technology. It assesses the benefits and limitations of microphone-based sensors as compared to other forms of pedestrian sensing. A large-scale dataset called ASPED is presented, which includes high-quality audio recordings along with video recordings used for labeling the pedestrian count data. The baseline analyses highlight the promise of using audio sensors for pedestrian tracking, although algorithmic and technological improvements to make the sensors practically usable continue. This study also demonstrates how the data can be leveraged to predict pedestrian trajectories. Finally, it discusses the use cases and scenarios where audio-based pedestrian sensing can support better urban and transportation planning.
Agent-Based Modelling for Urban Analytics: State of the Art and Challenges

Agent-based modelling (ABM) is a facet of wider Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) research that explores the collective behaviour of individual `agents', and the implications that their behaviour and interactions have for wider systemic behaviour. The method has been shown to hold considerable value in exploring and understanding human societies, but is still largely confined to use in academia. This is particularly evident in the field of Urban Analytics; one that is characterised by the use of new forms of data in combination with computational approaches to gain insight into urban processes. In Urban Analytics, ABM is gaining popularity as a valuable method for understanding the low-level interactions that ultimately drive cities, but as yet is rarely used by stakeholders (planners, governments, etc.) to address real policy problems. This paper presents the state-of-the-art in the application of ABM at the interface of MAS and Urban Analytics by a group of ABM researchers who are affiliated with the Urban Analytics programme of the Alan Turing Institute in London (UK). It addresses issues around modelling behaviour, the use of new forms of data, the calibration of models under high uncertainty, real-time modelling, the use of AI techniques, large-scale models, and the implications for modelling policy. The discussion also contextualises current research in wider debates around Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and MAS more broadly.
Time Series Prediction using Spark
These days in high-tech or smart cities the pedestrian counts can be monitored by deploying sensors at certain locations which can count the number of pedestrians every hour(as per the data used for this blog) or as required. From the title of the post itself one can understand that here we will try to predict the count of pedestrians or pedestrian traffic at certain locations for the next hour from the data of previous hour(s). This technique is also called a one-step time-series prediction, where we are predicting the next value with the previous values. Therefore this is a time-series regression type of problem as the data to predict is of continuous nature. Using these predictions we can select the locations with most traffic which can then be used by certain companies to market their products, performers in the music and entertainment industry to make sure that they are heard by the most amount of people, etc.
Urban Crowdsensing using Social Media: An Empirical Study on Transformer and Recurrent Neural Networks

An important aspect of urban planning is understanding crowd levels at various locations, which typically require the use of physical sensors. Such sensors are potentially costly and time consuming to implement on a large scale. To address this issue, we utilize publicly available social media datasets and use them as the basis for two urban sensing problems, namely event detection and crowd level prediction. One main contribution of this work is our collected dataset from Twitter and Flickr, alongside ground truth events. We demonstrate the usefulness of this dataset with two preliminary supervised learning approaches: firstly, a series of neural network models to determine if a social media post is related to an event and secondly a regression model using social media post counts to predict actual crowd levels. We discuss preliminary results from these tasks and highlight some challenges.
Patterns of Urban Foot Traffic Dynamics

Using publicly available traffic camera data in New York City, we quantify time-dependent patterns in aggregate pedestrian foot traffic. These patterns exhibit repeatable diurnal behaviors that differ for weekdays and weekends but are broadly consistent across neighborhoods in the borough of Manhattan. Weekday patterns contain a characteristic 3-peak structure with increased foot traffic around 9:00am, 12:00-1:00pm, and 5:00pm aligned with the "9-to-5" work day in which pedestrians are on the street during their morning commute, during lunch hour, and then during their evening commute. Weekend days do not show a peaked structure, but rather increase steadily until sunset. Our study period of June 28, 2017 to September 11, 2017 contains two holidays, the 4th of July and Labor Day, and their foot traffic patterns are quantitatively similar to weekend days despite the fact that they fell on weekdays. Projecting all days in our study period onto the weekday/weekend phase space (by regressing against the average weekday and weekend day) we find that Friday foot traffic can be represented as a mixture of both the 3-peak weekday structure and non-peaked weekend structure. We also show that anomalies in the foot traffic patterns can be used for detection of events and network-level disruptions. Finally, we show that clustering of foot traffic time series generates associations between cameras that are spatially aligned with Manhattan neighborhood boundaries indicating that foot traffic dynamics encode information about neighborhood character.
